Nils Holgersson, a young boy the size of a thumb flies on the back of geese through the marvellous nature of Sweden. A timeless story of the desire for freedom and homesickness, of friendship, love and the search for oneself. The adaption by Thomas Zaufke and Henry Mason will be premiered as a family musical in Graz.
Nils lives with his twin sister Åsa and their parents on the Holgersson farm. He has his hands full and doesn’t always seem to be able to complete all of his tasks. He is longing for a break free from all the expectations his family has of him. After angering Tomte, the Holgerssons’ guardian spirit, Nils is shrunk. Searching for new adventures he flies on the back of Martin the Christmas goose following a flock of wild geese.
Nevertheless, Nils can’t forget his sister, and likewise, she won’t give up the search for her lost brother. Will Nils’ marvellous journey lead him back to his family?
Selma Lagerlöf’s children’s book has been delighting readers young and old for generations.
Created as a family musical by successful composer Thomas Zaufkem Henry Mason who is best remembered by Graz’ audience for his fast-paced production of Guys and Dolls, brings this enchanting story to the stage of Oper Graz. Together with stage and costume designer Jan Maier, he creates an atmosphere that immerses the audience in a magical Sweden. Using puppetry, dance and video, an oversized world is created from the perspective of the shrunken Nils. The production takes a sensitive look at our environment and reminds us of the link between humans and nature that is not always an uncomplicated one.
