(ossia La bontà in trionfo)A dramma giocoso in two acts (1817)
Libretto by Jacopo Ferretti

World premiere in Rome on 25 January 1817, Teatro della Valle
Rossini’s version of the fairytale Cinderella is not only an energetic, sparkling bustle, but also a brilliant celebration of voices. With Anna Brull in the title role, young Italian director Ilaria Lanzino explores the lively fairytale world from a perspective that scrutinises the supposed stereotypes of girls’ dreams à la Barbie.
After the loss of her mother, Angelina, known as Cenerentola, lives with her entitled stepsisters and stepfather, suffering a bleak existence. Marriage to a prince? Unthinkable!
At the same time, however, Prince Don Ramiro has his servant Dandini searching for his future bride. In order to find the one who loves the prince for himself and not his wealth, an elaborate game of mistaken identity with daring deceptive manoeuvres is staged.
This may confuse the eyes, but certainly not the pure heart. The plan succeeds and true love triumphs: Cinderella and the prince are finally united in happiness!
Rossini created the dramma giocoso, that not only impresses with beautiful bel canto cantilenas, fast-paced and breathtaking coloraturas and his typical exuberant ensembles, but also tells a story about the ideal form of love, which knows no external factors such as wealth or social status. And he did it in an incredible 21 days!
With a humorous take, director Ilaria Lanzino examines the mechanisms inherent in the fairytale between man and woman, which the prince and his Cinderella are no longer willing to accept in this interpretation.
