Die drei Musketiere
A play from the romantic era with music from yesterday and today
Text based on motifs by Alexandre Dumas by Rudolph Schanzer and Ernst Welisch
version for Graz Opera by Georg Schütky
In German language
A mixed ensemble of actors from the LebensGroß Theatre Academy and singers from Graz Opera embark on a fight for freedom and justice for all. The specially created adaptation of Ralph Benatzky’s revue operetta offers snappy sounds for gruelling battles and exciting emotions.
As the second of the three Berlin operettas created in collaboration with revue director Erik Charell, Ralph Benatzky created the sword-flashing “play from romantic times with music from yesterday and today” in 1929, immediately before the still famous Weißes Rössl. In order to uncover the treacherous machinations of the deceitful Cardinal Richelieu and protect the well-being of Queen Anne, her son King Louis and the entire French nation, the three musketeers D’Artagnan, Aramis and Porthos shy away from neither open combat nor hot (love) games and face even the most cunning schemers with wit and cunning!
Almost one hundred years after the premiere, the equally fearless ensemble, consisting of opera singers and players from the LebensGroß Theatre Academy, takes on the infamous musketeers. Courage also unites the performers, who work together for the first time in this production and share the experience of having to overcome hurdles: While the singers have to assert themselves in a high-risk profession, the players from the theatre academy are challenged to break through boundaries in a world that is not designed for them due to the players’ impairments.
Georg Schütky, director of Beggar’s Opera, which was successfully performed at Oper Graz in 2023 as part of the inclusive theatre festival InTaKT, is working on his own version with the ensemble. Ralph Benatzky’s music will be perfectly adapted for the extravagant ensemble. Get ready for a watertight happening on the studio stage of Graz Opera!
