Schneewittchen und die 77 Zwerge
Family musical for ages 6 and up in two acts
Libretto by Susanne Felicitas Wolf
In German language
“I want to experience something for once, not just bat my eyelashes” is the motto of the strong-willed, karate-wielding Snow White in Elena Kats-Chernin and Susanne Felicitas Wolf’s powerful version. Supported by the life-size rabbit Richard III and 77 dwarves from the Graz Opera singing school, Snow White succeeds in taking her life into her own hands and escaping persecution by her deceitful stepmother. Lovingly encouraging fun for the whole family with a fast-paced musical mix of classical, musical and pop, cartoon film music and pop songs.
Snow White is a thorn in the queen’s side. While she spends day in, day out making sure she looks perfect, the beautiful girl has to spend her days practising her writing. But everything changes when Snow White makes a friend for life in the form of the human-sized, tap-dancing magic rabbit Richard III. She saves Richard from the cooking pot, and so he does not leave her side when Snow White’s stepmother orders the child to be shot by the huntsman Müller. In the forest, behind the 77 mountains with the 77 dwarves, the clumsy girl and her rabbit friend finally find asylum, but not even here are they safe from the queen, because the all-knowing mirror on the wall has betrayed them, and so the evil queen appears at the 77 dwarves’ front door as a cunning saleswoman for innovative household appliances and demands entry ...
Of course there is a happy ending, a loving prince, a rescued Snow White and an evil queen who is left to be judged fairly by an independent judiciary. The successful duo Susanne Felicitas Wolf and the Uzbek-Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin have taken the fairy tale for what it is: a story of possibility. Wolf and Kats-Chernin explore the possibilities of the Brothers Grimm’s original for young people in the present day in a pointed and imaginatively comical way. At the same time, they do not forget to delight adults with small parodic references to their world.
